Queen + Paul Rodgers (Miami Concert Review w/set list)
First, I must say Queen are still a force to be reckoned with -- let nobody say otherwise. After seeing this concert, I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Now that we have that away. They performed Friday 3 March 2006 at Miami, the opening date of their first US concert tour in over 20 years -- and this being my first Queen concert.
Let me being by saying I am a Freddie Mercury fan and Queen without Freddie simply isn't the Queen we all know an love. I went to this show with much trepidation because I am not a big fan of either Paul Rodgers or Bad Company -- to be quite accurate: I am wildly indifferent. Nonetheless, I went with my friend Evan (the world's biggest Queen fan ever), and figured I'd be in for an interesting night. I was not disappointed in that regard.
Queen still rocks. I must say, Paul does not try to be Freddie Mercury, and that's a good thing because that would have ruined absolutely everything. Queen does many of their hits plus a number of Paul's hits as well. I daresay, everyone will have a good time except those expecting to see a resurrection of the Ghost of Freddie.
Here's the set list as we heard it:
It's A Beautiful Day (intro)
Reaching Out
Tie Your Mother Down
Dragon Attack
Fat Bottom Girls
Take Love Where You Find It, (new song, first live performance ever)
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Say It's Not True
'39
Love Of My Life
Hammer To Fall
Feel Like Makin' Love
I'm In Love With My Car
Last Horizon (as a Guitar solo)
Bad Company
Another One Bites The Dust
These Are The Days Of Our Lives
Radio Ga Ga
Can't Get Enough Of Your Love
The Show Must Go On
Bohemian Rhapsody
We Will Rock You
It's Alright Now
We Are The Champions
God Save The Queen (Instrumental)
Queen performed faithfully all these songs -- carefully picked to avoid needing Freddie. Those astute among you will note that Bohemian Rhapsody without Freddie would simply be unacceptable, would be entirely correct. So, Queen, in their infinite wisdom used an overlay audio track of Freddie to do most of this song, Paul coming only when the song goes into full Rock-Drive. It worked very, very, very well.
The audience interaction from the band's perspective was great, but I was disappointed in the Miami crowd (as was Evan). The concert was only 60% full at best and many of the people there were obviously not Queen fans. I think all real Queen fans know how to do Radio Ga-Ga, and I have to say I was embarrassed at those who were in the stands -- although those on floor mostly were with the programme.
My sole disappointment, of course, was the lack of Under Pressure, one of my very favourite Queen song. I like the stuff from Flash (sue me, okay) but wasn't crushed it wasn't performed. I also was mystified why they didn't open with The Show Must Go On because that would have been appropriate.
I have seen posts elsewhere saying that after the show was over that they played the music from the bonus hidden track from Made In Heaven when the lights came on (after they left the stage) but I am unable to verify this as we left as the closing notes to God Save The Queen wafted into the air.
The show was a solid two hours from start to end and well worth the obscene amount we paid for floor seats. it was opening night so there were some issues: an out of tune guitar, some lines to songs flubbed here and there, but nothing catastrophic.
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die

I *think* I'm a Queen fan, but I don't think I know how to "do Radio Ga-Ga"...
Flash?! Gak! (Then again, I like their Highlander stuff...)
I would have missed Don't Stop Me Now and Innuendo, but that's a pretty awesome set list. I agree about Under Pressure; it should be an integral part of any Queen set list
Flash, although, campy on the surface is actually quite a good album on many levels. Seriously, check it out.
I have to agree with Jose, Don't stop me now is (as I was telling Eric on the way home) one of if not my favorite Queen track, but, did not expect them to play it. I was quite surprised with the 2nd song out of the gate was Dragon Attack. It's bad enough that the people there did not know "Love of my Life," "I'm in love with my car," or how to "do" "Radio Ga-Ga." Expecting people in Miami to know "Dragon Attack" is like expecting George Bush to get through a complete thought without saying "uhhhhh."
The show overall was in a word phenomenal! Afterwards, I was trying to think about how I could explain it to my wife in terms she could understand. I will preface it by saying that unlike Eric, I have seen Queen before on the Hot Space tour, which means it was quite a while ago, but, at least I have the feather in my cap of seeing Queen. Anyway, my wife is a huge Phantom of the Opera fan, so, in terms that she could understand, this concert was like if you saw POTO with Michael Crawford, you would say you saw the best, there is absolutely no doubt. Now, if you saw it again, you still love the show, it's still your favorite, and still great, but, it's not Michael Crawford. So, needless to say, the show was great!
I won't mention I saw Phantom with Michael Crawford in it but think Robert Guillaume (Benson) was better -- but don't tell your wife 'cause she'll kill me. But that's actually a good analogy for those who saw one and not the other.
This would probably work for any number of bands and not just Queen. There are many other groups (Styx, Journey, et al) that have been reborn to varying effects from good to sucky.
Well Queen fans...I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've seen Queen with Freddie Mercury four times in Toronto.
They are coming here on Thurs March 16th to a sold out Air Canada Center.
The set list you have there is as good as I could expect although they used to open with "We will Rock you followed by We are the Champions"
I had already heard about Bohemian Rhapsody and find it a fitting tribute.
I still remember the Freddie Tribute in 1992 at Wembley Stadium where everyone from Guns and Roses, Metallic, David Bowie and Elton John appeared. It was a 12 hour spectacular.
I can't wait as I have 10th row floors just off to the left of center stage.
Review to come.

Well I'm still in a state of euphoria from the Queen show on Thursday Night in Toronto.
We stood, cheered, clapped, screamed and cried for 2 1/2 Hours of what was again the best show I've seen by far...not the Freddie shows though.
And they played "Under Pressure" which was shared between Paul, Brian and Roger in the vocals.
The light show was mind blowing, the sound was incredible and not a hitch to be found.
Vocal wise, Paul Rodgers is amazing. He was hitting notes that I think he was surprised about. Brian gave him a few fist bumps and high fives thru the show.
The guys all looked great- the new members of the tour band were really into it, jumping around and taking their moments especially the basist during "Another One Bights the Dust".
Based on what they were saying, the reception in the States so far has been good but they really looked forward to playing Toronto because as they said, Freddie thought this was his city away from London and loved to be here.
I consider myself blessed to see them now five times...I doubt they will tour again but with a new CD coming out ya never know.
I really like the new material. They played two songs...one sounding very Bad Company like and the other Queen like...both I really liked.
The set list seems to be constant but they changed the order around opening with Tie Your Mother Down.
We certainly know how to clap for Radio Ga Ga as Brian joked about it from one of the previous shows...no one new how to do it!
I had a few tears in the eyes during the performance of Bohemian Rhapsody...one of my all time favorite songs.
Now I want to see the Queen Stage show...it is coming to Toronto later this year.
Thanks for letting me Ga Ga some more...
Steve Calderwood...a 30 year fan of Queen from Toronto.
I am so jealous you got Under Pressure, one of my long-time favourites.
Hey...Queen fan here from the beginning (so...I won't tell u my age!!!). Went to the show at ACC (Toronto) Thurs. night. It was special for me...I last saw them - with Freddie & John of course, over 20 yrs ago. I know Paul would NEVER replace Freddie, but he did an amazing job. He was not there as a replacement but as a musician who had the pipes and the chemistry to work with Brian & Roger. We did hear Under Pressure, but I was a little disappointed to not hear Killer Queen, Now I'm here.., Brighton Rock, etc.(their "older" stuff). Nonetheless, it was awesome...brought back bittersweet memories. Seeing Freddie on video was very moving. It was a wonderful experience. Completely sold out and interesting to see families (kids as young as 10 or so) and lots of teens (thanx to Wayne's World I suppose). Queen still rule....Brian May is a God...I think Freddie himself would have been pleased.

just saw the show in phoenix last night, it was awesome, they came right out and rocked the 1st 2 songs were tie your mother down and fat bottom girls, then they did under pressure they said it was their 1st attempt on this tour and the crowd went nuts. one of the best shows i've ever seen

Queen & Paul are in Anaheim tonight so I am stoked to see such positive news about the concert. I am taking my wife and my 20 and 14 year old daughters who are big fans of Queen. I started out enjoying the boys with "Killer Queen" but never had the chance to see them live until the Hot Space tour with Billy Squire. A shame that would be the last chance most of us in the US would have to see Freddy perform live.
I thought George Michael might have been a good choice to tour as he did a standout job with Somebody To Love in the Tribute concert and he is so over the top. However, that might have invited unfair comparisons to Freddy.
I have a special T-shirt for the occasion tonight: Freddy in black and gold. My daughter bought it for me as a goof a few years back and I haven't had the right opportunity to wear it until tonight. Will let you know how it goes.
