The Quagmire

The Quagmire describes my mind -- full of random bits of things all stuck together -- these things may include, but are not limited to: music, television, movies, writing, sports, technology, reading, theatre, politics, religion, sports, and whatever other ramblings and rantings that comes to mind.

A Pair of Chuckletrousers and 2038 Random Boogers

This post has nothing to do with that. In fact, I refuse to explain it. Those of you who know, get it. The rest of you don't. -- CMOT TMPV    (That was fun.)

Right. Let's start with an e-bay item which is a true rare piece of history. Yes, that's an original Apple I computer. The original kind, hand built by Steve and Steve (Woz and Jobs) and it's entirely authenticated. I won't bid nor will any of my readers. But you should go look at it. This one doesn't come with the cool wooden case but it's still cool.

This picture was sent to me by a friend.
It's entitled "How Pumpkin Pies Are Made"

This article is another rant about the accuracy over at Fox News. You may be interested to read how intentionally fast and loose they are with the facts. I was going to make a cheap Alan Price joke as a follow up, but that would be redundant.

I want to remind my friends that my mobile phone is not the best way to contact me when I'm in town. Call me at work or at home. I've been known to go days without turning it on. That leads me to remind you all, I still have that ticket from yesterday: I offered Mom the use of 25,000 US Air miles because they're expiring very soon but I can't get her a good flight on the days she wants to travel. If she can't use -- we're still trying -- them and any of my friends want a free ticket, I'll gladly book you a flight. I hate for them to go to waste. If you're interested email me with dates and city pair and I'll see if anything is open.

Tomorrow, I have to go to Best Buy and do some Xmas shopping for a few people. I have this long standing policy of being done all holiday shopping prior to Black Friday and I am failing miserably.

Hockey resumes Monday and I am excited. I have Monday, Wednesday, and Friday hockey games. I also have way too much spare time this long weekend which I am looking to fill up. Work was way too boring today.

Lastly, an interesting document from Tfl will amuse you subway fans. The Tube (London's Underground) is very busy. The busiest station is Victoria which handles 78 million entries/exits per year. That's an astounding number and is more than the annual ridership in many cities. Waterloo follows at 77 million, and King's Cross is behind it at around 69 million. Liverpool and London Bridge both clock in at over 60 million. Between those five stops, that's 350 million. All told the Tube carried almost two billion last year. Boston's T carries 1.3 million a day, Chicago 650k per day, New York 5 million per day, or Miami with 60,000 per day. Yeah, Miami carries 21 million trips a year and London has single stations that beat it. A sad state of affairs, isn't it?

Out Damned Cough

This cough sucks. Dry and hacky and it won't go away. I hatesssssss it. It's not as bad when I'm lying down in bed. Opposite of normal.

Shout out to Tara. It's okay: you can eat a PayDay bar if it makes you happy.

This from Dave Higgins. It's a subway map. But this one takes 250 of the best movies of all time and plants them on a (fake) subway map. The amount of work and effort that has gone into this is mind boggling. The main page is here and underneath are the links to download the image so you can spend hours looking at it. You can read the second page, mais il est en Français. However for those who don't speak French, he clearly states he took films as rated at IMDB and some of the films he doesn't feel are worthy of inclusion.

I've been toying with a Blu-Ray drive for my Mac since they came out. But they started at $1200 for an external 1x speed, so it never materialized. They started falling in price, and now this one is out for $400 and it claims to be 12x. Anyone know anything about this?

Another hockey night approaches this week, and along those lines, someone posted an amusing link on the Panthers Message Boards to this blog, entitled Fake Michael Yormark. It's clear someone has a lot of free time. There's a blog, a matching Twitter account, and even a full live.com profile. There's content, which if you look at it, is utterly hysterical. That assumes you know who Yormark is. He's the guy I'm not a big fan of because (a) he's a liar* and (b) he sold the team's soul. I've commented my opinions on various hockey message boards about him. Some people seem to like him but most people I speak to seem to get the "used car salesman" feeling from him. I am enjoying the mockery, though I think it's far too gentle. I gave it a thumbs-up on StumbleUpon and a mention on Facebook as well. If you're as amused as I am, feel free to share it.

Yeah, it's a short news day today. I'll be back in a few days with more, I suppose.

Did I mention how much I hate this cough?

I finished listening to the Pogues albums I got: The Best of The Pogues, The Very Best of the Pogues, and the Rest of the Best. This is now one of my very favourite bands. I want to see them in concert. Their albums are very good so far and am in love with them. Thanks John. My favourite song of theirs is The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. I have a Rod Stewart version. Not very good in comparison.

I also listened to Dengue Fever, an obscure band that John was playing at his BBQ that I really liked. Having now heard all of them, some is really good and some average. But I like them. Then I listened to Kiss Alive IV which was pretty damned good -- my first Kiss album.

Lastly, did I mention how much I really hate this cough?

* Specifically, I met with him (which was blogged) and he said he'd answer me within a week. In his own blog he mentioned me and said he'd be getting back to me within, two weeks. It's been about a year. That makes him a liar.

Welcome Facebook People :)

Today, I found you could link your blog to your Facebook profile in the 'news' tab, so I did. I'd like to welcome all the Facebook people who didn't know I had a blog. Feel free to join the 213,000 people before you that have already been bored to death by my blog. It's probably more than that, but the counter, well, I didn't quite install it right away having no idea anyone would actually give a shit. Silly me.

Tara had made a Facebook post "25 things" and, honestly, I ignored it because it scared me a little. Then Erin did it, and I ignored it. Then guilt set in. So today I did that "25 things" post as well. In it you list 25 random things about yourself. I was all over. I mentioned my love of subways (the undeground train and not the abhorrent sandwich chain) figuring I was close to alone in my fandom of said trains. Amazingly, I am not. Wow.

So what subways have I been on? London, Paris, Toronto, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, Miami*, Charlotte*, Atlanta, Cleveland, Taipei, Chicago, and Hong Kong. I have seen but not ridden on Shanghai. I give San Francisco's BART and Hong Kong's MTR the highest marks of the lot. However, for sheer fun value the hands down winner is London. So I welcome all subway geeks too :)

Skating is on again this weekend (details are here for those who wish to attend, and I'm always willing to offer rides from my house for friends who wish to meet.). This new system is working well since A inexplicably abandoned me. We're going to rotate rinks and days so everyone who wants to play has a chance.

Tomorrow, Thursday, I am sending a gift to someone. This pleases me. And none of you have any idea what I am talking about. This pleases me even more. Friday, we shall see how it is received.

I gotta get back to work and stop killing time.

* Some people do not count these.
